ROAD TO KOREA

Route 1 · Living history

Gyeongju

Silla tombs, temple landscapes and a city best understood after sunset.

Gyeongju turns Route 1 from a transport line into a historical journey.

Quick planning brief

Recommended stay: 2 nights

Best base: Hwangnidan-gil edge for evening walks; terminal side for practical movement

Why this stop earns its place

The central tomb district is walkable and atmospheric, while Bulguksa and Seokguram require separate transport. Two nights prevent the city from collapsing into one hurried monument circuit.

Arrival and local rhythm

High-speed trains stop at Gyeongju Station outside the old center. Local buses and taxis complete the journey; intercity buses arrive closer to the main walking district.

Where to stay

Stay near Hwangnidan-gil for evening access to the tombs, but expect crowds. The bus-terminal side is practical and usually quieter.

Food and practical notes

Try a traditional set meal and local bread, but avoid choosing restaurants only by queue length. Evening walks around Woljeonggyo and the tombs are a central part of the stay.

When to move on

Two nights is ideal. Leave after a second morning or temple visit rather than late at night, when regional connections thin out.

Places that fit this route

  • Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae and Woljeonggyo as one central circuit
  • Bulguksa and Seokguram as a separate excursion
  • Gyeongju National Museum when weather or historical context calls for it

A realistic sequence

  1. Arrive, settle near the central tomb district and walk after sunset.
  2. Use the first full morning for Bulguksa and decide separately whether Seokguram fits.
  3. Return for the museum or central heritage circuit.
  4. Leave after a calm second morning rather than compressing the city into a day trip.
