Gangneung is where Route 2 changes mood. The inland transfer ends and the trip becomes coastal.
Quick planning brief
Recommended stay: 2 nights; 1 night for a coast handoff
Best base: Station or center for transport, Gyeongpo for beach mornings
Why this stop earns its place
Gyeongpo and Anmok are famous, but the city’s real value is the contrast between an active regional center, old houses and a long, open shoreline. It rewards travelers who give the sea more than a photo stop.
Arrival and local rhythm
KTX from Seoul is the simplest arrival. From Wonju, check both rail and bus because departure points and waiting time can change the best choice.
Where to stay
Choose Gyeongpo for beach mornings, the station area for short stays, or the city center for markets and meals. Anmok is lively in daylight but not always the most practical overnight base.
Food and practical notes
Try 초당순두부 in Chodang and visit the coffee coast early, before weekend traffic. Summer weekends require advance lodging; winter brings clear light but strong wind.
When to move on
Plan two nights if you want both city and coast without rushing. One night works when Gangneung is a handoff to Sokcho or the southern east-coast road.
Places that fit this route
- Ojukheon and the older city context
- Chodang for sundubu and a slower lunch
- Gyeongpo, Anmok or Jumunjin—choose one coast section at a time
A realistic sequence
- Arrive by KTX and settle near the station or center.
- Pair Ojukheon with Chodang instead of crossing the coast repeatedly.
- Give one sunrise or early morning to the beach.
- Use the final half day for the market or a southern-coast continuation.
