ROAD TO KOREA

Route 5 · Food and hanok

Jeonju

A walkable food city whose quieter streets matter as much as its famous village.

Jeonju is the clearest opening chapter for a food-led journey through Jeolla.

Quick planning brief

Recommended stay: 2 nights

Best base: Hanok Village edge for atmosphere; city-center edge for quieter rooms and meals

Why this stop earns its place

Hanok Village is busiest in the middle of the day. Stay overnight so the lanes can be experienced before tour groups arrive and after shops close.

Arrival and local rhythm

Fast trains use Jeonju Station east of the center; express buses arrive southwest. Both require a local bus or taxi to the hanok district.

Where to stay

A hanok stay offers atmosphere but often thin walls and floor bedding. Choose the city-center edge for easier sleep and meals while remaining walkable.

Food and practical notes

Bibimbap is only the beginning. Order a local 백반 meal, visit Nambu Market and leave room for makgeolli. Ask prices before ordering shared table menus.

When to move on

Two nights supports a calm visit. Continue toward Namwon, Suncheon or the west coast after an early market breakfast.

Places that fit this route

  • Hanok Village before day-trip crowds
  • Gyeonggijeon and the cathedral area for historical context
  • Nambu Market and nearby food streets for an evening circuit

A realistic sequence

  1. Arrive and leave luggage before walking the central heritage area.
  2. Return to the hanok lanes after the busiest afternoon period.
  3. Use the next morning for Gyeonggijeon and a proper local meal.
  4. Continue south after breakfast rather than leaving immediately after arrival.
