ROAD TO KOREA

Route 6 · Port city

Mokpo

Modern history, island ferries and one of Korea’s strongest maritime food cultures.

Mokpo is a destination and a transfer point, but it should not be reduced to the ferry terminal.

Quick planning brief

Recommended stay: 2 nights; 1 night before a ferry

Best base: Station and old-port area; ferry terminal only for an early sailing

Why this stop earns its place

The old port, Yudalsan and modern-history streets explain how the city faced both the sea and colonial-era trade. It is a strong base before islands or Haenam.

Arrival and local rhythm

KTX from Seoul reaches Mokpo directly in roughly two and a half to three hours depending on service—not nine hours. The station is walkable to parts of the old center.

Where to stay

Stay near the station and old port for a first visit. Choose the ferry side only for an early sailing, and confirm terminal details because routes use different facilities.

Food and practical notes

Seafood is central: 홍어 is challenging for many visitors, while 낙지 and seasonal fish are easier introductions. Ask whether dishes are priced per person or per table.

When to move on

Two nights is comfortable; one works before a ferry. Add buffer time in bad weather because island sailings can change.

Places that fit this route

  • Yudalsan and the old-port streets
  • Modern History Museum district
  • Gatbawi or the marine cable car when weather and time justify the transfer

A realistic sequence

  1. Arrive by KTX and walk the old port before sunset.
  2. Use the next morning for Yudalsan or the modern-history district.
  3. Check the exact ferry terminal a day before any island departure.
  4. Keep weather buffer rather than booking a tight train-to-ferry connection.
