ROAD TO KOREA

Route 8 · Korea’s land end

Haenam

Fields, temples and the slow final approach to the southern edge of the peninsula.

Haenam makes sense as the conclusion of a southwest road journey, not as a quick excursion from Seoul.

Quick planning brief

Recommended stay: 1–2 nights

Best base: Haenam town for buses and meals; Ttangkkeut or temple lodging only with a clear route plan

Why this stop earns its place

The county is large and attractions are dispersed. Duryunsan, Mihwangsa and Ttangkkeut point in different directions, so choose one theme rather than collecting distant stops.

Arrival and local rhythm

From Mokpo, buses generally take around 70–100 minutes depending on the service and destination. From Seoul, plan a much longer multi-stage journey; do not label the Mokpo segment as the full trip.

Where to stay

Haenam town is the practical base. Ttangkkeut or temple-side lodging is for travelers with a car or a confirmed rural-bus plan.

Food and practical notes

Look for meals using local sweet potato, seasonal greens and seafood. Rural closing times are early, so secure dinner before heading to isolated accommodation.

When to move on

Allow one full day plus a night. Continue only after checking the exact terminal and last bus; distances inside the county are easy to underestimate.

Places that fit this route

  • Duryunsan and Daeheungsa as one mountain-temple day
  • Ttangkkeut as a separate land-end direction
  • Mihwangsa only when driving or when rural transport is confirmed

A realistic sequence

  1. Arrive from Mokpo and confirm the final local bus before leaving the terminal.
  2. Choose either the Duryunsan side or the land-end side for the main day.
  3. Eat and provision before moving to isolated accommodation.
  4. Return to town with enough margin for the onward intercity connection.
